It doesn't matter if you're an Author, Musician, Indie film maker or whatever, if you produce material that's available to the public then you better grow a thick skin fast and I mean the hide of a Rhino. Because you will have people that will tear everything you worked so hard on to shreds, be it a genuine dislike or just plain trolling, and man it stings like a Japanese hornet, like someone just took a dagger and cut your heart out, then for good measure stomped on it. I learned very quickly just how hurtful and degrading a lot of people can be, hurling insults and the like, you see anyone can act the hard man when they're hiding behind a computer screen and a user name. I wonder if they would have the nerve to come up to me on the street and say it to my face? I severely doubt it.
Even recently on Good reads, I received a one star rating on my book that is now edited and updated, from the same guy that gave it a 1 star rating before I had it edited. Go figure that one out? Anyway, when I wrote my first book back in 2008 the amount of backlash I received was unreal, you see when I told people that I was going to write a book they just laughed at me and told me to forget it that writing is not a real job and any way you won't amount to anything. Pretty disheartening, well if they thought that their opinions meant anything to me how wrong they were. The more they put me down the more determined I became, but because of a certain vanity press (Authorhouse) they truly fucked up my book with their pathetic cover and even worse editing. Yes that really shattered me but I picked up the pieces and got on with life. The one's who tried to put me down still had to eat their words because I done what I set out to do, regardless if Authorhouse messed up or not I still finished what I said I was going to do.
The same goes for everyone that's involved in creating content that's in the public domain, we will be crucified and dragged across hot coals for our efforts, but you have to understand that this is part of being a creative, we have to deal the bad and sometimes the horrendous things that people will do to knock us down. My answer to them is Fuck you, maybe we can do something only they can dream about doing like writing a book, directing an indie film or whatever, sure my work is not perfect, it's not going to be nominated for a Bram Stoker award anytime soon, but its something I enjoy and I'll be damned if I'm going to let a few idiot trolls try and throw me under the bus, I'm older, wiser and stronger now and at the end of the day it's all just sticks and stones. I've had to grow a thick skin over the past year and since I did, things have been a lot easier writing wise. When I think back on some of the comments that hurt back then, I can only laugh at them now because they were so childish and idiotic, and I was the bigger fool for letting them get to me.
If you're like me, an Indie Author or whatever you may be, just accept the fact that being trolled and harassed is all part of the game, and if people think we're worthy enough to be trolled then we must be doing something right. :-)
